A rare piglet born at Chester Zoo could help save an entire species from extinction
The birth of a rare piglet at Chester Zoo, named Rana, is a beacon of hope for the critically endangered babirusa species, found on just four small Indonesian islands. This piglet, born to mother babirusa Matano, who was herself born at Chester Zoo over a decade ago, carries the weight of big hopes and expectations for the rest of her kind. With only one or two piglets born at a time, and a population threatened by African Swine Fever, Rana's arrival is a crucial step in the zoo's conservation efforts.
Chester Zoo conservationists are working with partners to protect wild babirusa populations through Action Indonesia's Global Species Management Plans. They are designing camera-trapping projects to monitor babirusas on Sulawesi and collaborating with other organizations to locate and protect surviving numbers. The aim is to share conservation breeding expertise, with results so far having bred at least 17 babirusas towards national cooperative targets.
The urgency of the situation is underscored by the fact that babirusas were only photographed in the wild on two occasions during the 2023-2024 period. Amy Humphreys, a conservationist at the zoo, emphasizes the race against time to save these omnivorous, charismatic, and intelligent pigs, which are important to island ecosystems as they drop seeds as they forage, helping forest regeneration, and are key indicator species for overall environmental health.
